Outlook Data files. What is PST and OST ?

Outlook Data Files:

When we use Microsoft Outlook, our email messages, calendar, tasks and other items are stored on a mail server, on our computer or both. Outlook items that are saved on our computer are kept in an Outlook data file. There are two types of outlook data files used by outlook

.PST (Personal Storage Table)

.OST (Offline Storage Table)

Personal Storage Table (.pst) : These are also known as personal folders. The more common PST files are used to store data related to POP3 and IMAP accounts. PST stores messages and other items on the computer. PST files can be stored anywhere in your computer and it makes it that much easier for you to keep a backup copy of your PST files or move it from one computer to another.

Offline Storage Table (.ost): It is an offline folder created by MS Outlook and MS Exchange to hold offline copies of whatever exists in the Exchange server. OST files allow you to work with your messages even when you can’t connect to the mail server. OST are always copies of items that are saved on a mail server and don’t have to back up like PST.
