Datto Backup Best Practice

 Pre-deployment best practices

  • Uninstalled all non-Datto backup software prior to using the Datto solution to avoid potential conflict. Disable any integrated backup solution that cannot be uninstalled.

  • Run a virus scan prior to deployment. Agent software must be in exceptions on antivirus and firewall software on the production machine.

  • All production machines must be capable of initiating and maintaining a gigabit speed or better connection to the Datto appliance.

  • Ensure that the production machine reboot schedule no conflict with the backup schedule.

  • All physical disks must be free of errors and fragmentation before deploying the Datto solution.

  • Clustered shared volumes (CSVs) are unsupported.

  • For Linux based machines latest kernel headers for their distribution must be installed.

  • For Mac based machines:-

    • Datto recommends disabling the deep freeze and Symantec encryption applications.

    • RAID configurations and apple file system are not supported.

    • The Mac must have its disk verified and repaired if necessary via first aid in disk utility.

  •  For agentless production machines

    • Check that the volume's virtual disk size is set to whole number.

    • Disable snapshots.

    • Enable Quiescing- when taking a quiesced snapshot, VMware pauses write operations to the virtual machine's virtual disk to achieve a consistent state. VMware snapshots are only crash-consistent.

    • VM Template- Changed Block Tracking (CBT) needs to be enabled for incremental agentless backup to function. The VM's virtual machine hardware must be version 7 or higher.

  • For SQL Servers

    • Datto recommends saving SQL maintenance jobs to a partition that is unprotected by the Datto.

  • For Exchange Servers- since they are essentially database servers with mail stores in EDB formats Datto recommends the same process for maintenance jobs in SQL and Exchange. Make sure that the Exchange writers are enabled on your OS. Also check for archiving tools, such as auto-archiving that may cause larger incremental changes.

    • For exchange 2010 and 2013 Datto recommends that you enable circular logging.

    • For earlier exchange version- VSS backup will truncate logs upon completion and circular logging can be disabled.

Datto Backup Process

Backup Process Local Backup The protected machine generates data that needs to be backed up.   The Datto appliance sends a backup request to the agent software installed on the protected machine.   The agent software opens the network transfer protocol and initiates the VSS snapshot on the protected machine.   The backup data is transferred over the network to the Datto and written to the live dataset.   On the Datto appliance, ZFS takes a point-in-time snapshot of the live dataset and integrates it into the backup chain.         Roundtrip:-                Roundtrip drives are external hard drives provided b y Datto to expedite the transfer of large data sets to the Datt...

Beyond the Basics: Understanding the 3-2-1 Backup Rule

In our increasingly digital world, data is king. From cherished family photos and important financial documents to critical business records, our lives and livelihoods depend on the availability and integrity of our digital information. But what happens when disaster strikes? A hard drive crashes, a laptop is stolen, a ransomware attack locks down your files, or a natural disaster renders your primary systems unusable? That's where the 3-2-1 backup rule comes in. It's a simple, elegant, and incredibly effective strategy for data protection that every individual and organization should adopt. Forget complex jargon – let's break down this fundamental principle of digital resilience. What is the 3-2-1 Backup Rule? The 3-2-1 rule is a widely recommended guideline for ensuring your data is safe and recoverable in almost any scenario. It's built on three core tenets: 1. 3 Copies of Your Data: This is your foundational layer of protection. You should al...
