Agent & Agentless Solutions

Windows Agent:-

Datto Windows Agent

Shadowsnap

To download Datto Windows agent

Dattoctrl   Dattosnap

Services:-

Datto backup agent services

Datto Provider

ShadowCraft     ShadowSnap

Shadow Protect

Shadowsnap

Shadowsnap agent uses VSS writers to capture application aware backup images.

In case of failure in specific VSS providers, Shadowprotect also has a fallback:  StorageCraft shadow copy provider.

The service only request the most important VSS writers to deliver a crash consistent backup.

Crash-Consistent Backup:- Crash-consistent Backup a type of backup in which transactional data is not maintained. The resulting backup will restore as through a hard reset of the production machine had taken place.

Service:

Shadow Protect Service

Shadow Craft Agent

Shadow Craft shadow copy provider

Datto Linux Agent

Datto Linux Agent Install

Datto Linux Agent Package Server

Installation Step

  1. apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname-r)

  2. Curl-s$ https://cpkg.datto.com/getLinuxAgent.txt |sudo bash

Agentless Backup

Benifits:

  • No client software to download.

  • Backup are more efficient

  • Agentless backups work on both windows and Linux virtual machines.

  • Backup can even run when a VM is powered off.

Supported on:

vSphere support

vSphere Essential

vSphere Essential Plus

vSphere Standard

vSphere Enterprises

vSphere Enterprise Plus

Networking

Speed Requirement: A gigabit network connection is required between all protected machines and the Datto appliance over a LAN.

Backup over a WAN will need a 50-Mbps dedicated uplink for every TB of protected data.

Latency between endpoints will have a considerable influence on the speed of backups. For syncing to Datto's Cloud will need at least 1 Mbps per TB of protected data. To prevent packet fragmentation make sure routers MTU is set to 1500 bytes.

Local Whitelisting Requirements:

All listed port need bidirectional communication enabled between the protected machine and the Datto appliance.

Windows Port Requirement:

  • TCP 25568 (Datto Windows Agent) or TCP 25566 (Shadowsnap)

  • TCP 3260 (iSCSI)

  • TCP 3262 (Mercury) MercuryFTP is a custom data transfer protocol created by Datto specifically for backing up Windows-based production machines.

  • TCP 139 (Samba)

Linux Port Requirement:

  • TCP 25567 (Datto Linux Agent)

  • TCP 3260 (iSCSI)

Mac Port Requirement:

  • TCP 25569 (Datto Mac Agent)

  • TCP 3260 (iSCSI)

  • TCP 3262 (Mercury)

BDR Appliance Deployment Requirement

Ports:

  • TCP 80 (HTTPS)

  • TCP 443 (HTTPS)

  • TCP 2200 (Remote Web)

  • UDP 123 (NTP)

  • TCP 22 (SSH)

And all ICMP package must be allowed from firewall.

Local DNS:

Must be access to appliance on following DNS

  • ntp.ubuntu.com

  • us.archive.ubuntu.com

  • security.ubuntu.com

  • ppa.launchpad.net

  • dattobackup.com

  • datto.com

  • device-packages.dattobackup.com

  • device-images.datto.com

IP Ranges:

All datto appliance must be able to access in following IP addresses in cloud infra, DNS fallback and device manager.

  • 8.8.8.8 - 8.34.181.199/32

  • 8.34.176.0/24 - 47.19.105.0./24

  • 162.244.85.60 - 162.244.87.60/32 port 5044

  • 162.244.87.59/32 port 5044

  • 162.244.87.0/24 port 443 and port 80

  • 192.49.95.0/24

  • 192.137.255.0/24 port 80 and port 2200

Datto Backup Process

Backup Process Local Backup The protected machine generates data that needs to be backed up.   The Datto appliance sends a backup request to the agent software installed on the protected machine.   The agent software opens the network transfer protocol and initiates the VSS snapshot on the protected machine.   The backup data is transferred over the network to the Datto and written to the live dataset.   On the Datto appliance, ZFS takes a point-in-time snapshot of the live dataset and integrates it into the backup chain.         Roundtrip:-                Roundtrip drives are external hard drives provided b y Datto to expedite the transfer of large data sets to the Datt...

Beyond the Basics: Understanding the 3-2-1 Backup Rule

In our increasingly digital world, data is king. From cherished family photos and important financial documents to critical business records, our lives and livelihoods depend on the availability and integrity of our digital information. But what happens when disaster strikes? A hard drive crashes, a laptop is stolen, a ransomware attack locks down your files, or a natural disaster renders your primary systems unusable? That's where the 3-2-1 backup rule comes in. It's a simple, elegant, and incredibly effective strategy for data protection that every individual and organization should adopt. Forget complex jargon – let's break down this fundamental principle of digital resilience. What is the 3-2-1 Backup Rule? The 3-2-1 rule is a widely recommended guideline for ensuring your data is safe and recoverable in almost any scenario. It's built on three core tenets: 1. 3 Copies of Your Data: This is your foundational layer of protection. You should al...
